"North Dallas Forty," a 1973 novel about the violent world of pro football, was written by Pete Gent, who played tight end for the Dallas Cowboys from 1964 to 1968 and for the New York Giants. He died of a pulmonary illness on September 30, 2011. "North Dallas Forty" was made into a 1979 feature film starring Nick Nolte, Mac Davis, G.D. Spradlin and Dayle Haddon. Gent adapted the movie's screenplay from his book.
