"Mother" was the name of the Nostromo's on-board computer when Dallas and Ripley both sought a solution to ridding the ship of the Alien .
Ripley felt she had an obligation to save all of the Nostromo's crew even Jones (Jonsey) since after the death of both Kane and Dallas she was the last remaining senior officer and she was , after all , fond of the ship's cat .
The motion tracker was to help facilitate the capture of the Alien by detecting it's movements . At the time of it's introduction the Nostromo's crew is unaware of the alteration in the Alien's size . Ultimately the device proved to be worthless to the ship's crew .
It has been said that the art of science fiction is the (Plausible impossible) as Disney once styled it dealing with trick photography. we are not talking about dancing spons or paint brushes here. as far as i know the spacecraft (always called a spaceship, never a U.F.O. a much more accurate term as it was Unidentified) was always referred to in the film E.T. as the Spaceship no name or even a serial number like X-l5, V-2 M-l0l, etc. This was one of many real credibility gaps in the film. it was almost a cross with the misadventures of an adopted animal , like the many Ivan Tors and Disney live actioners- but not credible sci-fi E.T. no Grok!
