When did Oslo become the capital city of Norway?

Before Oslo was the capital Bergen was the capital because Norway did a lot of trading with Germany and other European countries and back then Bergen was easier to access by ship.

In 1624 Oslo burned almost completely down, and King Christian IV of Denmark desided to rebuild Oslo and call it Christiania. Ever since Oslo has been the capital and was renamed Oslo in 1925

According to the Snorre Sturlason saga, King Harald Hardraade established a «kaupstad» east in Oslo. Nineteenth century historians suggested that this must have taken place in 1048 AD. This is based on chronological data about King Haralds travels and other historical data.

However, it is unlikely that a king at that time established a «kaupstad», or market town, in a place where a substantial settlement not already existed. The kings decision is more likely a confirmation of the towns existing status as an important trade hub.

Archeologists have found a large number of graves, houses built in a streetlike pattern and remains of human waste and artefacts suggesting that a a town-like settlement existed earlier, probably going back to approximately 1000 AD. Based on this scientific conclusion, Oslo celebrated its 1000 year anniversary in the year 2000.
