Doha is the capital of Qatar. The city of Doha was established in 1825. Doha was capital of the British protectorate of Qatar in 1916, and remained capital of Qatar when it gained its independence in 1971.
Great Britain established a protectorate over Qatar in 1916, during World War I. This arrangement was formalized with the signing of the Treaty of Doha, which allowed Britain to control Qatar's foreign affairs while granting internal autonomy. The British influence continued until Qatar gained independence in 1971.
Charles Henry Harrods first established his business in 1824, at age 24. The company Harrods was sold in May 2010 to Qatar Holdings, the sovereign wealth fund of the State of Qatar.
