Yes, King John of England was crowned on May 27, 1199, almost two months after the death of his brother, King Richard I. What may be confusing is that the early kings of England after 1066 often found themselves struggling with their own relatives to keep the throne. Even William the Conqueror had to fight his own sons. Richard and John also led a major rebellion against their own father, King Henry II. Richard and John were no different- while Richard was fighting in the Crusades, John did scheme to take the throne from him, and was able to overthrow Richard's unpopular ministers who ruled in his absence. Upon Richard's return, John was pardoned and apparently remained loyal for the rest of Richard's reign.
