He was the first governor
Richard Nicolls was the military governor of the Province of New York from 1664 to 1668. George Clinton was the First Governor of New York from 30 July 1777 until 1 July 1795.
iN 1664, Colonel Richard Nicolls led a fleet of four warships, carrying 450 soldiers, that sailed into the harbor of New Amsterdam (present-day New York City) and demanded the surrender of the entire colony of New Netherlands (which included settlements along the Hudson River up to Albany and elsewhere). It was a surprise attack and New Amsterdam was not prepared to fight, with only 150 soldiers of their own, plus Nicolls offered the people of New Amsterdam the same rights as English citizens if they surrendered without a fight. Nicolls was acting on behalf of the Duke of York in England, which is why the colony was renamed New York. In return for Nicolls' successful conquest, he was named Governor of the colony of New York.
Richard Nicolls, 1664-1668
Colonel Richard Nicolls 1664 -1668. New York was given to James Duke of York by his brother Charles II after the Dutch ceded their colony of New Amsterdam upon losing the Second Dutch War.
Colonial New York was faced by a very rapid population growth that brought about gross lawlessness and tax evasion. It also brought about the lack of religious freedom for the people especially in New Amsterdam.
Before it was officially named New York and it was the New Netherlands under the Dutch rule, Peter Minuit was governor from 1626 to 1647. From 1647 to 1664 (when the English took over), Peter Stuyvesant was the governor. His impact was the greatest, as he helped create a fire department, police force, and made attendance at church obligatory. Richard Nicolls was implemented as the first British governor of New York, and he was given power by the Duke of York (for which New York was named after) to make laws and raise taxes.
Richard Ravitch is the 75th Lieutenant Governor of New York and has held that office since 8 July 2009.
The first Mayor of New York City was Thomas Willett, who served from 1665 to 1666. Before 1664, New York City was under Dutch control, and was called New Amsterdam. New Amsterdam did not have mayors; instead, the Dutch appointed a Director General to govern the city. In 1664, the English took control of New Amsterdam and renamed it New York. From 1664 to 1665, Richard Nicolls governed New York under the title of British Military Governor of the Province of New York. In 1665 the office of Mayor of New York was established, and Thomas Willett became the first official Mayor of New York City.
