Besange (or Besanger) hails from Besangia in Latin ; and Bessingen in German. Bay-san-zhay is proper pronunciation. It is a region in Lorraine, Northeast France where the Besange/ Besanger family comes from. In China -- where the family holds the title of 'hero of the Nation' owing to the actions of Fr. de Besange -- it is pronounced 'Bei-Hsien-Cher'. Fr Besange was shot twice by Japanese snipers in 1937 yet soldiered on to create the "Jacquinot de Besange" safe zones that saved an estimated 1.5 to 2 million Chinese during WWII. His talks with President Roosevelt may have led to the US embargo on Japan and the Pacific War. The name originally hails from Besangia in Northeast France and the family motto is 'non sibi' meaning 'not for self'. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Besangia was Lorraine's wealthiest region, owing to its large salt mines, generating about 60% of the region's output. It encompassed Salzburgen (Chateau-Salins), Grande Besange and parts of Nancy. The Besange family married into the royal family of Lorraine several times ; from about 960 to 1789 they were the power brokers in the region, owning the titles of Seigneur de Besange, Marquis de Besange and Baillis de Besange. During the French Revolution the domain was broken up, and adult males were guillotined. About 200 survivors migrated to La Rochelle and Brive in Western and Southwestern France where they became farmers or joined the Jesuit orders. In recent years its community leaders have formed a discreet association called AFB-- 'Association Familiale Besanger'-- whose actions focus on life sciences, blood donation campaigns, disaster relief, peace advocacy and the arts.
