A. Hamilton Thomson has written: 'Roche Abbey, Yorkshire'
Roche Abbey in Maltby, South Yorkshire, was originally a Cistercian monastery founded in 1147. It served as a religious retreat and community for monks, following the Cistercian way of life, which emphasized simplicity and self-sufficiency. The abbey was dissolved during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII in the 16th century, after which it fell into ruin and the site was repurposed for other uses. Today, the remains of Roche Abbey are a scheduled ancient monument and are recognized for their historical significance.
