Germany made the first submarines in WW1. They were called U-Boats, short for "unterseeboat" Most modern submarines are descended from The Holland, christened in 1897, invented by John Holland.
In 1915, Paul Langévin invented the first sonar type device for detecting submarines called an "echo location to detect submarines" using the piezoelectric properties of the quartz.

That airplanes, submarines, and automobile engines would be invented.
They made aircraft because nuclear submarines had not yet been invented.
The first submarines were seen in Germany around the time of WW2 and they were placed in the English channel. The rest of the world had not seen submarines and because all of the supplies went across the English channel they could not understand why all their ships were sinking. The Germans invented them for war but they are more commonly used for deep sea exploration. When the Germans invented submarines they also had to invent things like underwater radar so they could see where they were going. I hope I have helped
