Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, was first settled with the arrival the First Fleet on 26 January 1788. Governor Arthur Phillip originally named the colony "New Albion", but the colony acquired the name "Sydney", after the (then) British Home Secretary, Thomas Townshend, Lord Sydney, from 1789
