Salem International University is a private, for-profit school located in Salem, West Virginia and was founded as Salem College in 1888. In 1989 the school formed an alliance with Teikyo University in Tokyo, Japan and was renamed as Salem-Teikyo University. In 2000 the school was purchased by Singapore investors and the name was changed to Salem International University. They are accredited through both the West Virginia State Board of Education, as well as the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. Just over 50% of the students are white and about 25% of the students are from foreign countries. Around 60% of the students are age 20-29. There are numerous clubs, sororities, fraternities, and student government opportunities. For students wishing to live on campus, there are two residence halls available. Those living off campus live in residential areas nearby. The school offers NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics and competes in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They compete in baseball, basketball, soccer, water polo, softball, swimming, golf, volleyball, and tennis.
