The plot begins with Watson being summoned to Holmes's side, where he finds his friend gravely ill. As the story unfolds, Holmes cleverly manipulates the situation, using his symptoms to entice Smith into revealing his guilt. In the climax, Holmes confronts Smith, ultimately leading to his arrest, and the resolution sees Holmes recovering from his ruse.
