Maximilian of Habsburg
Maximilian I was an Austrian archduke who became the Emperor of Mexico in 1864, installed by French forces during the French intervention in Mexico. His reign faced significant opposition from Mexican republicans, led by President Benito Juárez. After the withdrawal of French troops in 1867, Maximilian was captured by Juárez's forces and executed by firing squad on June 19, 1867. His execution marked the end of the short-lived Second Mexican Empire and the restoration of the Mexican Republic.

The Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian was installed in Mexico as a puppet emperor by Napoleon III in 1863. He was dependent on the support of the occupying French army and when Napoleon withdrew his troops Maximilian was captured by Mexican forces loyal to their legitimate republican government. Maximilian, in desperation, assumed personal command of his forces, then mostly concentrated at Querétaro. There, after a siege, he was captured and shot.
