The Lion King was being created from October 1991 to early 1994 as Lion King co-director Roger Allers joined the project (when it was known as King of the Jungle) in October 1991 to when trailer prints of the film were released on VHS copies of The Fox and the Hound in March 1994.
The movie premiered in theaters in the summer of 1994. The producers of the movie began working on an idea for the Broadway musical almost immediately, when they saw how popular the movie was. The musical officially premiered in Minneapolis, MN in 1997. It has now been running for over 15 years.
