1st April 1918, it was their 90th anniversary this year. That was when the Royal Air Corps became the Royal Air Force, a separate branch of service. The US did not form their Air Force until 1947.

The RAF was formed on April Fools' Day 1918 and was an amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). It was designed to combine the best of both organisations and maintain standards across the field of heavier than air aviation (planes not balloons)

The Royal Navy took control of maritime aviation again in 1939 when the Fleet Air Arm was formed.
