It was actually an amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service

∙ 11y agoThe RAF was formed on April Fools' Day 1918 and was an amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). It was designed to combine the best of both organisations and maintain standards across the field of heavier than air aviation (planes not balloons)
The Royal Navy took control of maritime aviation again in 1939 when the Fleet Air Arm was formed.
