Ieyasu Tokugawa, the prime minister of Japan at that time, decided he wanted to start from scratch and build Himeji Castle using modern materials and design methods. Tokugawa had the Tokyo Himeji Castle built in a new location on the other side of Tokyo. He named the new castle after his wife, Himeji. Tokyo's Himeji Castle is widely regarded as the most impressive and significant castle still standing in Japan. Interestingly, Tokugawa renamed the castle Ryoanji Castle after divorcing his wife in 1763. However, the castle has continued to be known as Himeji. Himeji Castle is Tokyo's most frequently visited tourist attraction.
