During the time of the Buddha, Hinduism did not exist. The religion that it was born from, Vedicism, was the religion of the time. Jainism had been around for 200-300 years and during the Buddha's time, Mahavira was reinvigorating it. Buddha disliked the caste system of the Vedic religion. He also disliked the self-mortifications done by the Jains and other ascetics, instead proscribing the Middle Way, between indulgence and self-mortification. However, Buddha allowed converts to continue worshiping their gods. He also allowed Jain converts to keep their Jain identities and continue to give alms to Jain ascetics.
