Vagelos Scholars Program in Molecular Life Sciences was created in 1997.
As CEO of Merck, Vagelos may make strategic decisions regarding investments in research and development of new drugs, exploring opportunities for acquisitions or partnerships to expand the company's portfolio, and setting priorities for resource allocation across different business units. Vagelos could also be involved in guiding the company's overall direction and growth strategy, overseeing financial performance, and representing Merck's interests to stakeholders.
Columbia University and Cornell University are both prestigious Ivy League institutions located in New York, with Columbia being situated in Manhattan and Cornell in Ithaca. They are affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, which serves as a primary teaching hospital for both universities. Columbia's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons has a more direct partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian, while Cornell's Weill Cornell Medicine also collaborates closely with the hospital for medical education and research. This relationship enhances the medical training and healthcare services provided by both institutions.
Colleges (and universities) give bachelor's degrees, after four years of study (or sometimes more, if taking fewer classes per term). After a bachelor's degree comes four years of medical school. After medical school comes four years of residency training in the field of psychiatry (usually in a hospital-based system, either affiliated with a university or not). However, almost all colleges give psychology classes (just not psychiatry classes - since those would come much later - after both college and medical school).
