The Valles Caldera is 77.4 miles from Albuquerque if you go on North I 25 then to North 550 then take State Hwy 4 through Jemez Springs and toward Los Alamos. By the way it's beautiful when it's full of snow.
When the Valles Caldera erupted approximately 1.25 million years ago, it produced a massive volcanic event known as a caldera-forming eruption. This eruption expelled an enormous volume of volcanic material, forming a large depression known as a caldera, which is about 12 miles in diameter. The eruption had significant geological and climatic impacts, contributing to the landscape's current features in New Mexico and affecting ecosystems in the region. The volcanic activity has since shaped the area, making it a site of scientific interest and natural beauty today.
