well
nobody is certain about it but it seems that ABBA "the visitors" was the first pop album to be released in CD , december 1981 .
some people want to put the bee gees album "living eyes" in that situation but the bee gees were at a low point that time (1981) compared to their "Saturday night fever" success so it seems plausible that it was ABBA's album ,the band had just received a prize for astonishing achievement (Super trouper was a triumph even more than their disco flavored Voulez-vous !)
maybe "The Visitors" by ABBA in 1982 (???)
First CD ever made was ABBA's "The Visitors" in 1982, pressed in Germany
There seems to be two contenders for the title of first CD release: ABBA's 'The Visitors' and Billy Joel's '52nd Street (both 1983). Yes but the first new album to come out on CD was born in the U.S.A by Bruce springsteen!
The Visitors.
The first Compact Disc for commercial release rolled off the assembly line on August 17, 1982, at a Philips factory in Langenhagen, near Hanover, Germany. The first title released was ABBA's The Visitors (1981)
"Honey, Honey" was recorded on January 30, 1974 and included on Abba's second album, Waterloo, released on March 4, 1974.
The first million selling CD was The Joshua Tree by U2 -> NO! It was Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits:"Brothers in Arms was the first album to sell one million copies in the CD format"
Abba was, but their album was released after Billy Joel's 52nd Street.
