Vocaloid has a bit of a history, like any software development. In at least 2000 and maybe even a bit earlier, Vocaloid began as a joint venture between Yamaha and Pompeu Fabra University in Spain. Yamaha provided funding for the research and later further developed the technology into the first product we now know as Vocaloid. The first commercial products to use the Vocaloid engine were Lola and Leon, released at the same time, on 15 Jan. 2004 by the UK company, Zero-G Ltd.
