The French, I think they were the first to have founded there a permanent settlement, controlled Wisconsin, but after the French and Indian War, which they lost, they ceded it to the British. After the American Revolution the area was ceded to the United States, but the British resided there until 1812 when it was really taken over by the Americans. Wisconsin became a state (it was the thirtieth one) in 1848.
