Although the sandwich is considered a relatively modern invention, it's actually no such thing: people have been using bread as edible plates to hold toppings or fillings such as meat or vegetables since bread was first used, all over the world.

Adding butter or some other form of grease to the bread keeps it moist and adds to the flavor of the sandwich, so that idea would have occured to ancient humans right at the start of our bread-eating days.
