I'm not sure if you're kidding or not. Do you think people were walking around for thousands of years before someone said "Hey, part of the time it's light and part of the time it's dark"?

Animals know the difference between day and night and have their characteristic active times (some animals are normally awake during the day, some are normally awake at night, and some sleep most of the time but tend to be most active at dawn and dusk). It doesn't make any sense to talk about "discovering" day and night, because whatever "discovered" it, it certainly wasn't human; we haven't been around long enough to have done so.
