However preparations began in 1999. Prices were expressed in euros as well as the old local currency, and mints were stockpiling coins for the changeover.
The euro officially started to circulate in 2002. Each state in the EU that voted to adopt the euro as its currency at that time established a transition period during which their old currency was used jointly; at the end of that time the old money was phased out and only euros were used. As other states switched (or will switch) to the euro, each will have its own timeline for conversion.
In most cases the transition period was only a few months, in order to minimize the difficulties of using two currencies side by side.
