2463 Serial # 2463 was made in 1881
Marlin has used both model, and serial numbers since they made their first handguns in 1870. However, this did not always include .22 rifles, as they were not always required to have a serial number, until 1968. Many Marlin .22 rifles from the post WWII to 1968 time were not serial numbered. Model numbers were always used, but some models were not marked with the model number. The model 1881, 1888, and 1889 Marlins were not marked with the model, but they were cataloged as these models.
Try this web link for the answer to your question. http://oldguns.net/cgi-bin/f2f/f2f.pl?http://oldguns.net/q&a1_05.htm Most likely your Marlin in .45-70 Govt. is a model 1881. These early Marlins were not recoded in Marlin records prior to about serial number 4000, but your's should date to about 1882.

The two old model Marlins in 38-55 were the 1881 & 1893. They recently re-introduced the 38-55 in a Marlin for cowboy action shooting. Try gunbroker.com for pictures.
If this is the Colt 1878 Frontier model serial # 5100 , then it was produced around 1881.
The Marlin Model 1881 was Marlin's first lever action rifle. It fired much more powerful loadings that the Winchesters and it beat Winchester's Model 1886 to the market by 5 years. Condition is everything in antique guns. If it has been refinished, the collector value is very low. If it is in original condition with the expected level of wear but not abused it could get upwards of $2000. THe Model 81 was a .22 cal. bolt action rifle with a tube magazine. It was superceded by the 881 and the the 981. It sells for around $100-200, depending on condition. A good average price is 150-175
Crosman never made a model 1881, but they did make a model 1861 called the Shiloh. If this is the gun you are asking about then see the link below
