Popcorn was first discovered by the Native Americans. Since the kernels were too hard to eat they would heat the popcorn until it exploded to get the nutrients. This was done by putting the kernels in a bowl of sand and placing it over a fire. When the popcorn exploded it would raise to the top of the bowl. The popped kernels would then be mixed with water and ingested. Popcorn was eaten by Americans after the Civil War as a quick, cheap snack. Popcorn was later used by the Kellogg Company as cereal. The only reason they switched over to corn flakes is because they couldn't figure out how to market boxes of pre-popped popcorn. Before the Great Depression, popcorn vendors would rent out the front of movie theaters and sell popcorn. During the Great Depression, movie theaters got wise and started to sell within their own. Later still, Orville Redenbacher created the microwave popcorn we know and love today.
Popcorn wasn't invented, it was discovered. The American Indians grew and ate popcorn for centuries before the Europeans arrived in the New World.
