The prepositional phrase is "of art."
In the beginning, before the printing press, printmaking was not considered an art form, rather a medium of communication. It was not till the 18th century that art prints began to be considered originals and not till the 19th that artists began to produce limited editions and to sign their prints along with the technical information necessary to authenticate the work. Engraving goes back to cave art, executed on stones, bones and cave walls. The duplication of engraved images goes back some 3,000 years to the Sumerians who engraved designs on stone cylinder seals. Academics think that the Chinese produced a primitive form of print, the rubbing, as far back as the 2nd century AD. The Japanese made the first authenticated prints, wood-block rubbings of of Buddhist charms, in the late-middle eighth century.

Photography is the process by which photographs are created. A camera is used. The images may then be printed. Printmaking is another art form (although, unlike photography, it is strictly an art form). In printmaking, an image is carved into a surface. Ink is applied and the image of the carving is then printed. Printmaking is actually the process - not just how you distribute the product.

Most universities with art programs offer bachelors in ine arts with a concentration in printmaking, along with most art schools. Printmaking is an indirect means of creating art by transferring an image or design by contact with a matrix such as a block, plate, stone, or screen. There are many different types of printmaking, just as there are many types of paints An artist chooses the medium based on the effect he/she is looking to achieve. Printmaking is considered an original art form because it is done completely by hand. The basic idea behind the printmaking processes is the ability to make more than one of a specific image in a limited edition. The artist will use some sort of stencil or plate to layer blocks of color on top of one another. The nature of printmaking requires that the entire edition be printed simultaneously because the artist must print one color at a time on each piece of paper. In some types of printmaking, the plates themselves have a limited lifetime and all plates must be destroyed after the entire edition is completed.
