Swimming was first held at the Commonwealth Games at the first-ever Edition in 1930. The program consisted of 11 events (6 for men and 5 for women). Joyce Cooper (England) won four of the five Women's Events: 100 yard freestyle, 400 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke and 4x100 yard freestyle relay.
