It was important for someone to reach the summit of Mount Everest as the North and South Poles had been reached and the summit of Mount Everest was the last big adventure for man.
A.S Cheema was the first Indian climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest, he did so on the 20th May 1965.
There has only been a handfull of disabled people to have climbed Mount Everest. Tom Whittaker from the USA became the first disabled/handicapped (has an artificial leg) person to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 27th May 1998. Others have included a blind man and a woman with one leg.
The tenth man to climb Mount Everest was Jim Whittaker on the 1st May 1963, he was the first American to do so.
On the 25th May 2001 Erik Weihenmayer became the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He did so with a strong team of climbers and Sherpas helping him all the way.
