Early 1960
The Canadian Astronaut program began in 1983 with the selections of Roberta Bondar, Marc Garneau, Robert Thirsk, Kenneth Money, Bjarni Tryggvason, and Steve MacLean.Garneau was the first Canadian to fly in space, aboard Challenger STS-41G in 1984.
The Canadian Government formed the Canadian International Development Agency in 1968. This Agency was established to manage the bulk of Canada's Official Development Assistance (ODA) program.
The famous Canadian associated with the Space Shuttle program is Chris Hadfield. He is an astronaut who flew on two Space Shuttle missions and later became the first Canadian to command the International Space Station (ISS). Hadfield is well-known for his social media presence and musical performances in space, which helped popularize space exploration.
The agency that oversees the US space program is NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). NASA is responsible for the nation's civilian space program and for aeronautics and aerospace research.
Marc Garneau became an astronaut and went into space as part of the Canadian Space Agency's astronaut program. He was selected for space missions due to his background as an engineer, military pilot, and experience as a scientist, making him a qualified candidate for space exploration.
Canadian astronauts bring expertise in robotics, science experiments, and space medicine to the ISS program. Canadian Space Agency's involvement in the ISS includes the development of the Canadarm2 robotic arm and the Mobile Servicing System, which have been essential for maintenance and assembly on the space station. Additionally, Canadian astronauts have contributed to various scientific research projects aimed at understanding the effects of space travel on the human body.
she went into space because she was studying a science program and went up to space to test it out :)
Roberta Bondar, Canada's first female astronaut, did not directly contribute to the development of the Canadian Arm (the Canadarm) used on the Space Shuttle. However, she played a significant role in the Canadian Space Program and her space missions helped advance Canada's involvement in space exploration. The Canadarm was developed by the Canadian Space Agency and was operational before Bondar's spaceflight in 1992. Her contributions to space science and research have furthered Canada's reputation in the field of space technology.
No Canadian ever went to the Moon. There have been no missions to the Moon since the Apollo progream ended. Therefore, only Americans have ever been to the Moon. There is a program, Constellation, which is being planned. The Constellation Program will send us back to the Moon and maybe to Mars.
The second Canadian astronaut was Dr. Roberta Bondar. Selected as part of NASA's Space Shuttle program in 1984, she became the first Canadian woman in space when she flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-42 mission in January 1992. Bondar is a neurologist and has made significant contributions to both science and space exploration.
Marc Garneau accomplished his career milestones by excelling in academics and obtaining advanced degrees in engineering. He then entered the Canadian Space Program and became the first Canadian astronaut to travel in space. Garneau's dedication, passion, and skills in space exploration led to a successful career as an astronaut, politician, and Minister of Transport.
