Weapons Designer John M. Browning (working at Colt Firearms) starting working on various prototype pistols for use by the US military in the early 1900's. After various modifications & other changes the military required, they finally adopted Browning's design in 1911. It was given the designation M1911 by the military.
A few years later, a few more modifications were required, and the M1911a1 (first revision) was adopted in 1924. This is the sidearm that was manufactured and used by the US Military for the next 60 years.
