It was initially devised in 1935 by the American seismologist Charles F. Richter (1900-1985). Often overlooked is the fact that the scale was developed in collaboration with his colleague (a German seismologist) named Beno Gutenberg at the California Institute of Technology.

The Richter Scale was invented in 1935. The older one, the Mercalli Scale was invented in 1884. The newest and most common scale, the Moment Magnitude Scale, was invented in 1970. Hope this was helpful to everyone. :)
