The San Francisco Police Department (originally known as the San Francisco Department of Police) was founded on August 13, 1849 during the Gold Rush under the command of Captain Malachi Fallon. At the time, Chief Fallon had a force of one deputy captain, three sergeants and thirty officers.

The San Francisco Police Department (also known as the SFPD) has the ranks of Police Officer, Inspector (Detective), Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Commander, Deputy Chief, and Chief of Police. The Inspector rank, while still in use, is no longer available for testing and promotion. All officers wishing to enter the Investigations Bureau must promote to Police Sergeant and request and investigative assignment. Additionally, the rank of Assistant Chief is not currently being used as a cost-savings measure.
