After the Tangiwai rail disaster in New Zealand in 1953, families of the victims mourned their loss and sought justice through legal and compensation processes. Additionally, memorials and commemorations were established to honor the victims and remember the tragedy.
The disaster occured at the North Island Main Trunk bridge over the Whangaehu River at Tangiwai. Tangiwai is located on the south-eastern side of Mount Ruapehu, around 10km east of Waiouru, and 20km east of Ohakune, in the North island of New Zealand.
On Christmas eve 1953 a lahar (or mudflow) caused by the eruption of Ruapehu destroyed the Tangiwai railway bridge. This resulted in the derailment of a train and the deaths of 151 people in what has become known as the Tangiwai Disaster.althought warned about the collapsed bridge the train driver was not able to stop the train in time.
