Which banks own the building societies in England?
All Building Societies are owned by their members and have 'mutual' status. If you invest money with them you automatically become a member no matter how small your investment. If they 'de-mutualize', they are then no longer building societies and become banks. Some building societies that have done this in the past have then been taken over by other banks. What was originally Halifax Building Society is probably the best known example of this. It de-mutualized and became a bank.
