The bouffant was a mainstream hairstyle in the mid-to-late 18th century in Western Europe. It was thought to be created for Marie Antoinette, as she had relatively thin hair and wanted to create the illusion of having very full hair. The modern bouffant is considered to have been invented by Raymond Bessone.[1] The hairstyle again became popular during the 1960s and early 1970s.

Bouffant
Generally it was a bouffant or a beehive.
People would comb it back with a type of gel that 1 out of 1000000 people wear today! Usually women would where their hair in a bun, ponytail, or simply wear it down. Back in the sixties people would make their hair look like wigs!
The in hairstyles for the 2010's are more bouffant styles with curls, unlike the choppy layer, messy styles and inverted bobs of the 1990's. Also popular are the scene styles that utilize teasing to achieve a more bouffant look. Current trend styles are now using plastic and velcro rollers to achieve waves and curls and also volume. Teasing is also used to add volume, which has made the "bump its" popular for giving volume without much teasing.
