Tut's tomb was found by Howard Carter, an English archeologist and Egyptologist, on 4 November 1922. In the extensive work to catalog and preserve the tomb's contents, the burial chamber was opened in February 1923.

There are three burial chambers - one underground and carved into the bedrock. Then one aboveground originally named the queen's chamber. Finally the king's chamber which held a red granite sarcophagus placed virtually at the centre of the pyramid.
People found out about Tutankhamun from the hieroglyphics and items left in his grave in the Valley of the Kings. This burial chamber was discovered by Howard Carter and the George Herbert, the Fifth Earl of Carnarvon in 1922.
