The conversion of Cornelius particularly was noteworthy because Cornelius was not proselyte member of the Jewish community.
The significance of Cornelius' conversion is that it shows that God's love and forgiveness is available to everyone, no matter who they are or what they have done. Cornelius was a Gentile, and at the time of his conversion, Gentiles were not considered to be part of God's chosen people. Yet, God showed Cornelius mercy and forgiveness, and welcomed him into the fold. This story is a reminder that no one is beyond God's love and forgiveness, and that anyone can come to Him and find salvation.
When the story of Cornelius was in the Bible is when the message of gentile conversion began. Peter had a dream about "clean and unclean" and then went to Cornelius's house. He preached to Cornelius and 6 other men. They received the message and from that point on the message was universal and not limited to just Jews and Jewish converts.
Cornelius had a vision in which an angel of God tells him his prayers have been heard. The angel tells Cornelius to send his men from Joppa to find Simon Peter. Simon Peter also has a vision, he sees four-footed animals and birds being lowered by a sheet, from heaven. A voice is telling him to eat the animals. Simon objects saying the animals are not clean, but, is told not to question God. When the two meet, Simon understands the vision and permits the conversion of the Gentiles and allows them to be baptized.
