I think you mean 1776, and if so, that was when the Declaration of Independance was signed. It was written by Thomas Jefferson and read out loud to possible signers, and then signed on that date. People who signed it were taking a huge risk, because if they lost, then they would be the first that the British would come after and kill. Only about 9 of them survived until the end of the war anyway. You can check with other resources if my answer is correct, and I hope this helps you in your studies! :)
