The Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) was first awarded on 11 June 1927 by US President Calvin Coolidge to Charles Lindbergh.
Amelia Earhart
In 1932, after she became the first female aviator (or "aviatrix" as they were called back then) to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, President Herber Hoover awarded her the National Geographic Society's gold medal; and Congress also awarded her the Distinguished Flying Cross.
The Distinguished Flying Cross was authorized by President Calvin Coolidge in 1926 (retroactive to 1918) aviation's pioneers. He gave the first DFC to Charles Lindbergh on 11 June 1927. For the DFC to be awarded for heroism, the act "must involve voluntary action in the face of danger and be well above the actions performed by others engaged in similar flight operations.
The Air Force was then part of the Army, as the still-used theme song makes clear. Amelia was in neither service. She did receive the Distinguished Flying Cross for her services to aviation. As far as is known this was the first feminine award, and the first and only one to a Civilian airman- as it was later restricted to the military. Today there is both a Distinguished Flying Cross AND an Air Force Cross- two different medals. There is also the Distinguished Service Cross which sometimes has been awarded to, say Defense contractors who are, again, not in the AF Blue or Army Olive Green!.
Amelia Earhart was a skilled pilot. She was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded for becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was also a best selling author of books about her flights.
Flight Lieutenant Michelle Jayne Goodman, RAF.
She received that in 1932 for her solo flight across the Atlantic in the 'Little Red Bus'.
