Willis Carrier was hired by the Buffalo Forge Company after he got out of college in 1901 to design a heating system to dry lumber and coffee. He realize the data available to him wasn't sufficient to design a system. He started his own research program to determine how much heat air would hold as it was blown across steam heated pipes. For the first time the company could accurately estimate how much heater surface area was needed to heat a given space. He solved the problem in temperature and humidity control for the Sackett Wilhelm's Publishing company in Brooklyn in 1906 where he installed the first air conditioner and began an industry. So, to answer your question it wasn't so much "sold", but made as he worked for the company.
