The Hebrew Bible or "Old Testament" was not written as a single unit; rather a number of scrolls were written, some of which were regarded as sacred or inspired. The Council of Jamnia, in 96 CE, selected those books considered to be worthy of inclusion in a Jewish sacred canon, thus creating what is now known as the Old Testament.

The very first book to be written in a form much as we know it today is Deuteronomy, believed to be written during the seventh-century-BCE reign of King Josiah. Other books of the Pentateuch and the Deuteronomic History (Joshua, Judges, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings and 2 Kings) followed.
