Centre Island is a part of the Toronto Island Park, which is just a fifteen minute ferry boat ride away from downtown Toronto. The main attraction on Centre Island is an amusement park which is primarily oriented toward children. There are also a few restaurants with patios. Many people often refer to the whole of Toronto Island as Centre Island, or just "The Island." There are small residential communities on Ward's Island and Algonquin Island and several beaches, including an official "clothing optional" beach. There is a Paramedic Station, a Fire Hall, and a community centre. A public school serves not only the children who live on The Island but also many classes that take field trips to The Island. Camping permits are available, but must be arranged beforehand. There are flower gardens, a long lakeside boardwalk, a frisbee golf course, a bicycle rental stand, and plenty of open space. Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run on Toronto Island.
The very first ferry was known to have sailed in the year of 1774. This ferry was called the Mersey Ferry and it originated from Liverpool, England.
