There are at least three answers to the question of when the first man was created.

  1. Scientific evidence has established that modern man evolved over two hundred thousand years ago. There was no one 'first man' because evolution worked slowly and across all people.
  2. The first creation story in Genesis 1:1-2:4a says that man, both male and female, was created on the sixth day, but does not tell us how long ago this could have been. To this extent, it could be seen as consistent with the scientific evidence, but is more often seen as consistent with the second creation story in Genesis.
  3. The second creation story in Genesis 2:4b-25 says that a man was created, followed by all the other living creatures, one by one, then Eve. This does not tell us how long creation took, but we can establish how long ago it would have been by adding up the lengths of each generation down to a known date in history. Bishop Ussher is famous for calculating that Adam was created in 4004 BCE.
