The first rollercoaster, as most historians consider, were Russian toboggans built in the 16th and 17th centuries. A rider would slide down ice covered wooden hills on a block of ice or a sled. riders would reach up to 50 mph and crash into a sand pile at the end. but the first actual "rollercoaster", was Cony Island's Gravity Pleasure Switchback Railway in 1884. Built by La Marcus Thompson, it traveled a mere 6 mph, but netted in almost $600 a week. -
