4 January 2001 was RuneScapes officials decided making it the beginning of RSClassic.
Another interesting note was that back in those days you could attack a player in any given location which was fun.
RuneScape is officially twelve years old, and development was started by Andrew Gower on his own. The first version of RuneScape's release, known as "DeviousMUD" in November 1998. DeviousMUD was not publicly released at this time. In October 1999, the first instance of RuneScape -- a new and re-written version of DeviousMUD -- was publicly released as a beta for one week.
By January 2001, DeviousMUD was re-written and a number of changes were made with the help of Andrew's brothers, Paul and Ian Gower, and the game renamed to RuneScape upon its release -- today, we know this version as RuneScape Classic.
In March 2004, RuneScape 2 was released, and following four years later in 2008, RuneScape High Detail was introduced. In modern times, a 'RuneScape 3' has been mentioned by Jagex Ltd (the company that pretty much owns RS), leading to speculation that the third generation of RS is possibly going to appear in 2013 or 2014, however nothing has as of yet been confirmed. HTML5 is likely going to play a large part in the next gen game.
Your question makes no sense. I'm going to take a wild guess and assume you meant how many years did it take to make runescape?
If so, less than a year. Runescape started out very simple with few things to do in it's begginings. (Runescape Classic)
Runescape 2 came out in 2004, but there was RS classic and others before it.

Runescape 1 is the first version of Runescape and used 2D figures. Runescape 2 and 3 are the same thing, it's just that Runescape updates recently changing graphics and stuff. Until they came out with Runescape 3 which just has an HD version. Also, Runescape 2/3 uses 3D instead of 2D figures.
The quest Swept Away was released in RuneScape at the same time as the Halloween event in 2008.
There is no Runescape 3, unless it's a virus, either way Jagex the creators of Runescape didn't create it that's for sure.

Runescape classic was the first version of Runescape ever released, and is now only available to people who signed up before it was changed.
