In 1795 Napoleon Bonaparte issued a challenge for anyone who could invent a method to extend the shelf life of foods. The reward (12,000 francs) was claimed by a French brewer Nicholas Appert . He invented a method of preserving food in glass jars. Napoleon believed that an army travels on its stomach. His army was like most others at the time and ate what little they could steal from locals, forage, or steal. Soldiers in that time suffered from ill health due to lack of sufficient healthy foods. Because of Napoleon Bonaparte and Nicholas Appert we have canning. Further advances were made over the years especially with regard to the development of jars and 2-piece lids.
