Crude flag-like vexilloids were used in Ancient Egypt around 3400 B.C. Early flags were used in China around 1500 B.C. The first modern flag was the Dutch Prinsenvlag; it is no longer in use.

In the center of the flag, against the black stripe, there was a white crescent moon and star. When Gaddafi was in power, from 1977-2011, The Libyan flag was a green banner. (He was in power from 1969, but the flag was changed in 1977.) There are no logos, insignias or designs on this flag. It was the only flag in the world that is just one color with nothing else on it. The first national flag was used in this same period by Libyan opposition and monarchists. When Gaddafi's regime was overthrown and Gaddafi himself killed, Libya switched back to its first national flag.
