She was originally laid down in 1929, but because of the Great Depression, work was halted on her until 1934 when the British Government gave a gran to the Cunard Line after a merger with White Star Line, owners of the Olympic and Titanic. RMS Queen Mary was launched in 1935, and her maiden voyage was in 1936.
